Muraplast – Strategic Development and Investments in the First Half of 2025

Capacity Expansion

Over the course of this year, Muraplast has increased its extrusion capacity – the production of polyethylene film in rolls used for packaging.

The new installed line is optimized for products such as shrink films, flat FFS films, stretch hoods, and shrink hoods, but can also manufacture other types of products. The line width is 1.800 mm, with an output capacity of approximately 250 t/month. The total extrusion capacity across the entire company now exceeds 2.200 t/month.

Data Center

Muraplast has become the majority owner of the DC North data center in Varaždin. Muraplast now holds a 75 % stake, while Cratis retains 25 %. DC North is currently the largest and most modern data center in Croatia.

Solar Power Plant

Muraplast has acquired a ground-mounted solar power plant in the Jug industrial zone in Kotoriba. The plant has an installed capacity of 715 kWp and a grid connection capacity of 495 kW. With this new installation, Muraplast’s total solar panel capacity stands at 2,412 kWp, with 1,773 kVA of inverter capacity.

Our goal is to use the electricity generated by this solar plant at the Muraplast South location.

This strategic acquisition aligns with MAP 2030 – Muraplast Action Plan for 2030 and will increase the share of our own electricity production.

Other

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) was published at the beginning of the year. It was expected to revolutionize packaging.

We are monitoring all amendments, but for now we can only note that there are too many announced delegated acts—i.e., too many unknowns—to know what specific requirements packaging will have in the near future. More questions than answers remain.

Major update of the investment cycle

More than one year ago we started an ambitious plan to increase our capacity by 50 % in 3 years’ time.

So, what has been done so far?

There have been significant delays, but we can proudly show a new printing line W&H NOVOFLEX running in our production hall. With a printing width of 1650 mm and a fully automatic reel handling system (read robot) at the back, it is probably the best wide web printing line in more than a 500 km radius.

In the new production hall, one blown film extruder line is finally running and the second one is still missing some parts. The lines are optimized to produce LDPE film for packaging. The big one for shrink and stretch hoods and the small one for FFS (form fill seal) tubular film and shrink films.

We have a new line for recycling polyethylene industrial waste. A workhorse with a capacity of 800 kg/h.

We have not forgotten the paper section. In the last two months, we have successfully installed three new paper bag machines. We can now offer 18×8 size paper bags and we finally have free capacity.

What is next?

Due to the energy crisis this year we plan to install a solar energy plant, use hot waste air to dry ink in printing lines, and raise the quality of our electrical energy by installing active filters. We will also try to impress our partners with our new central office building in our new location.

This year from 24^th to 30^th September, MURAPLAST is proud to participate in the FSC Forest Week campaign by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The campaign highlights the value of forests and how choosing sustainably-sourced products can help create resilient forests for the future.

The theme of the campaign this year is “Choose Forests. Choose FSC.” By choosing FSC-certified products, you are helping to protect forests and all the life they sustain.

From 2022 we won’t offer any non-recyclable packaging

Several years ago, we stopped to offer biodegradable plastic packaging. It was a strategic decision based on simple fact that our products (mostly packaging) are not intended to be degraded in nature or industrial compost sites. We are not against biodegradation but for our plastic product portfolio we favor recyclability. Some costumers were shocked at first, but they respected our decision and concluded also that it’s the best ecological choice.

At the beginning of 2022 similar thing we see for multilayer substrate/PE non-recyclable packaging. Again, we are only focused on our product portfolio and not on high barrier packaging and solutions which we don’t produce. Now there are good technical solutions for replacing PET/PE (BOPET/PE) materials with recyclable mono PE/PE material.

Here one can raise a question why we focus only on PET/PE?

We don’t focus only on BOPET/PE, but it makes 84 % of all substrate/PE lamination market so it’s ideal candidate for replacement. Only few years ago technology wasn’t ready for the change without compromising some of advantages that such solution offers. But now we are ready.

BOPET has excellent modulus, optics and heat resistance, low conformability and commonly used in packaging for medium duty liquid and dry food and non-food products.

Next target is BOPP/PE packaging which makes 9 % of all substrate/PE lamination market commonly used in packaging for dry snacks and confectionary.

Last target, still in development, is the BOPA/PE packaging which makes 7 % of all substrate/PE lamination market commonly used in packaging for liquid food and non-food applications.

Sustainable success stories from 2021

Bio-based and fully recyclable

In collaboration with DELT Papir, producer of tissue and hygiene products, we have successfully introduced LDPE film from renewable resource for paper towels packaging. I’m green Polyethylene biopolymer is made from renewable resources that make a significant contribution to reducing the level of greenhouse gas emissions. Green Polyethylene made from sugarcane is a renewable alternative to Polyethylene, a thermoplastic resin largely used for packaging in consumer products industries.

Recycling of laminates

In collaboration with our partner H.B. Fuller, a leading global adhesives provider, we have demonstrated recyclability in advanced-performance pouch. Link.

Enhanced stretch hood

We have successfully produced stretch hood for pallet packaging with increased mechanical strength and holding force. The upgraded product is now on several industry sites.

Recyclable mono materials for replacing substrate/PE lamination solution

With new materials we are able to replace non-recyclable PET/PE and PP/PE packaging solution with recyclable mono material PE/PE.

Introducing recycled content wherever possible

We are ready for minimum 30 % post-consumer recycled content (PCR) in all non-food packaging solutions. In shrink film, in FFS flat film (packaging of pellets, soil…), in FFS tubular film (salt, fertilizer…), cover film and even stretch hood.

And even more recycled content with pre consumer material (post-industrial) in all non-food solutions.

Downgauging

For us downgauging of thickness was always of key importance. Last year we had big success in reducing thickness of compression film for packaging of straw and wood chips.

Donation of medical equipment

It’s Christmas time, a time to give and be thankful. Also this year, instead of buying Christmas presents, we decided to donate medical equipment worth € 21,000 to the COVID and Pediatrics Department of the Čakovec County Hospital.

Croatian Index of Sustainability score

MURAPLAST has scored 402 from 466 in Croatian Index of Sustainability done by the Croatian Business Council for Sustainable Development. Average score for big companies was 286,84.
